A Group Show Curated by Basak Malone and Sara Wight

October 1-15, 2009

Opening reception Thursday October 1st 6-8pm

Featuring Sarah G. Sharp, Katie St. Clair, Martha Clippinger, Parsley Steinweiss, Sara Wight and Jordan Tate

Derived, Borrowed, and Stolen brings together artists whose work addresses the nature of originality and its complicated relationship with the visual arts. The central theme and title is inspired by the well-known quote, “talent borrows, genius steals,” which is said by some to have come from none other than Picasso (rumor has it that it might also have been Morrissey’s, of the rock band Smiths, or even Oscar Wilde’s). The uncertainty surrounding the origins of the quote is ironically apt. Linked by this common thread, the works in this show raise questions about what constitutes creativity in today’s world, one in which the Internet has rendered copying and plagiarizing in the visual arts easier and more socially acceptable. Over a plethora of visual styles, these innovative artists find new ways to pay homage to their artistic inspirations while producing wildly inventive pieces. The viewer sifts through the rich layers and discovers, through the eyes of the artist, the difference between simple pastiche and ingenious reinterpretation.

François Geffray

A Solo Show

December 15-31, with an opening reception on friday 18 December 6-8pm

French artist François Geffray is no stranger to new challenges. Having explored a vast array of mediums from digital art to painting, his body of work is vast and varied. Geffray’s work takes its primary focus in the form of people and culture. Geffray’s artwork takes a psychological perspective of the “other.” Drawing on images from day-to-day life Geffray’s work highlights both the highs and lows, contrasts and similarities between human relationships by producing morphed images that combine literal representation with metaphor.

Geffray’s striking paintings draw us into an enigmatic and sensual world of fantasy, seduction, and spirit. Geffray’s work features a variety of styles such as Surrealist figurative work, luscious quasi-abstraction, and folksy still life’s. Geffray’s work often appears formalist in its concerns; the artist is equally drawn to isolated and quiet places—as he is to crowds and chaos. The one strand linking the various facets of Geffray’s work is his overwhelming sense of fluidity, swelling brushstroke, and his sumptuous approach to applying paint on canvas.

Color and form undulate in florid compositions that form an interior dialogue on the intersections of space, place, time, memory, culture and history.  Geffray’s new series of works in acrylic emphasize the leitmotif of a spiritual journey that is at once historically embedded and intensely intimate and personal. Primarily a figurative artist, Geffray is known for paintings characterized by mask-like faces and elongation of form. His graceful portraits and lush narratives evoke a very personal idiom, distinguished by strong linear rhythms, simple extended composition, and verticality. This minimalist reduction is effective in its simplification of form, which like Plato’s ideal forms, function not as reality, but as an archetype of the land and sky which reside deep in our collective unconscious, as well as a representation of our deep connection with the earth. His work confronts the image of the individual, a subject Geffray repeatedly revisits.

The jury liked most, Carmen Einfinger ‘s project… Do you have a chance to revive the Lower City? - It refers to  Gaudi, Niki de Saint Phalle and Friedensreicha Hundertwasser..

THE RESULTS OF THE 3RD INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION OF THE OUTDOOR GALLERY OF THE CITY OF GDANSK

On 6 July the Jury of the International Competition of the “Outdoor Gallery of the City of Gdansk” gathered in CCA Laznia in order to judge the projects submitted to the competition.
1st Prize and indication for realisation in Dolna Street and the equivalent of €5000 gross: “Scent of Colour” by Carmen Einfinger

image
Justification of the verdict:
“The Scent of Color” by New York artist Carmen Einfinger won the first prize of the Outdoor Gallery competition and will be realized at Dolna Square: the jury was convinced by Einfinger’s sensuous ad colorful proposal which will turn Dolna square into a festive oasis redesigning the existing public service point (as the kiosk and the bus stop) and transforming the central alley into a garden with benches, bird houses and a fountain. Einfinger’s proposal is a strong and unique statement which will reshape Dolna Square into a joyful meeting points for families, friendly to the environment and inviting to rest and communicate. Her artistic gesture refers to the code of pop and youth culture. The artist was inspired by the Kameralna Restaurant’s exuberant use of color and forma – one expression of Gdansk’s longing for aesthetically sophisticated environments.

………..What
enchanted me is the fact that the author inscribed in its very clear artistic vision of existing facilities, such as  the bus stop and kiosk………….
