THE BERGEN BIENNIAL CONFERENCE
As scholars and curators have recently acknowledged, the history of exhibitions is both one of the most vital and, paradoxically, ignored narratives of our cultural history. And given the increasing role of biennials and other perennial exhibitions of contemporary art in contemporary culture, it seems all the more necessary to critically examine them today. The impetus to do so now comes in response to the City of Bergen’s plans to establish a biennial for contemporary art in Bergen, Norway, for which the Bergen Kunsthall has taken up the task of organizing an international conference and think tank to study and discuss the status of the biennial as an exhibition model, and also to launch a debate concerning the plans for a biennial in Bergen. (more…)

PooL Art Fair: The Only Art Fair for Unrepresented Artists

Frère Independent is proud to present “Me Me Me,” the sixth New York edition of PooL, its annual independent art fair. The PooL Art Fair will be held for the first time at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Chelsea after two successful years at the historical Hotel Chelsea. The change of venue—owing to Hotel Chelsea’s new management’s refusal to host the show: “We don’t care about legacy, image or any of this… All we want is money.” – allow a few good improvements for the viewers and new media artists. Each room offers a 32inch plasma screen and the Lobby’s three plasma displays promise quite a solid presence of new media art at this year show. This brand new hotel has reserved 2 to 3 consecutive floors just for the PooL Artists allowing visitors to have a condensed view of the artists’ works. (more…)
